The Women

I have written, and re-written this blog entry trying to find my opinion on women in technical fields.  What I have found is that I don't really have an opinion on women in the technical fields.  I don't know whether it is an abundance of ignorance, or if I am just overly apathetic, but I have not seen this as a problem in my experiences.  Thus far, I have not spent too much time thinking about women in these fields.  I do acknowledge that there are typically more men in these fields than women, but the reason behind that alludes me.  I believe that people should do whatever they are interested in, whether it be women in computer science, or men filling the role as homemakers.  Maybe we will see a higher number of women in these, and maybe not, but I personally do not see a problem either way.

  1. Yea, I feel like that too sometimes. I just don't know exactly what all the reasons but I would like everyone(women and men) to try out computer science and feel like they can choose that path if they want to

  2. You may be apathetic but I can't be apathetic to the way we passively exclude minorities.
It's not just a matter of interest. How can anyone be interested in something when they're constantly discouraged from even trying it out?
And then, once they become interested, they're thrust into a society that's apathetic to them: it doesn't value the same things they do and it doesn't try very hard to include or understand them. There are even people who outright harass them, who question their basic intelligence, who claim they're not equipped to be successful because of their innate brain chemistry.
You may not have seen it, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. It's a whole lot of small things, but they add up quickly.
